Colonization and reproduction efficiency comparison between biofilm-harvested and planktonic AKS2 cells. Equal numbers (approximately 104 CFU) of biofilm-harvested cells and planktonic cells of AKS2 were separately inoculated in basal media containing sterile LDPE films and incubated at 30°C for different time points. After the incubation, polyethylene films were recovered from the conditioned media, stained with acridine orange and observed under a fluorescence microscope. Microbial colonization efficiency (A) and reproduction efficiency (B) were examined. The figure is representative of images obtained from 20 different fields and from three independent experiments. Statistical significance between the groups of reproduction efficiency was evaluated by ANOVA.
