Comparison of cation exchange capacities. The CEC values were determined in duplicate at the standard pH of 8.5 for the nine different agricultural chars and a soil control (#15). A wide variation is observed for the averaged values dependent on source materials and char preparation methods. Error bars are standard deviations for each sample’s averaged CEC assays (see Additional file 1: Table S1 in the Additional file 1)
