The hypothetical model of the autodisplay secretion mechanism. The transport protein (e.g., enzyme) translates from the cytosol through the inner membrane, where the signal peptide is cleaved off by specific peptidases. The autotransporter and the passenger enzyme move across the outer membrane for outward exposure. The β-barrel helps in anchoring the passenger onto the surface of the bacteria whereas the linker enforces the outward exposure of the passenger
